We cannot lose sight of the human perspective in developing new technology. This article explores strategies to blend innovation with core human centred principles.

I often see technology solutions prioritised over human needs. While advancements provide benefits, we must ensure people stay at the forefront. For example, confusing interfaces or efficient chatbots can frustrate people. Though technology enables potential, we must strike a balance. Do we want solutions that are technically impressive but lack human understanding? Or ones that solve real human problems?

Human centered design prioritises user needs and capabilities. Direct user input ensures solutions align with real needs. But do designers always practice genuine empathy?

How can technology better understand people?

Technology can significantly enhance Human centred design in various ways

  • Big data and AI analyse user patterns, enabling personalised experiences. But data alone lacks deeper human context.

  • Large Language Models create fictional user representations to help designers empathise and ideate solutions that solve real problems: a promising development, but no replacement for real human interaction.

  • Extended reality creates immersive engagement opportunities. VR could enable "trying before buying". Powerful capabilities, but potential isolation risks?

  • Tools like Midjourney produce prototypes and envision future scenarios. Impressive outputs, but do they foster connection?

  • Accessibility technologies make products usable for all. Steps towards inclusion, but more progress is needed.

What are the potential pitfalls of over reliance on technology?

  • Assuming technology alone identifies needs overlooks human aspects. Impressive solutions can fail to meet actual needs—a problematic mindset shift.

  • Data provides insights, but direct interaction builds deeper understanding. Surveys alone risk misinterpreting people's real needs. We must complement data with conversation.

  • Efficiency can compromise usability. Optimised sites can frustrate people unfamiliar with the site. Speed isn't everything.

  • Mishandled data damages trust. Transparency and consent are essential.

Which notable examples of human centred design in technology can inspire innovative approaches?

  • Duolingo's human centred design is evident in its gamification of language learning. Each lesson feels like a game with rewards for correct answers and opportunities to level up, making the language learning process more enjoyable and motivating for people.

  • Uber's design is showcased through its simple and intuitive app interface, which allows people to book a ride with just a few taps. The app also provides real-time tracking of the driver's location, an estimated arrival time, and the option to rate the driver and the ride, ensuring a seamless and transparent process for people.

  • Spotify revolutionised the music industry and the way music is consumed. It provides a personalised and convenient service by offering a vast range of music for a monthly fee.

In conclusion, we can only create technological innovations that genuinely empower us by putting human needs first. Technology aids data analysis and creates opportunities. But it alone cannot meet human needs. Balance is key. By blending innovation with deep human understanding, we can design solutions that connect us, not isolate us.
